Enter your test budget, target cost per acquisition and average order value. See how many creatives you can afford to test and how long each needs to run.

How to use it

  1. Enter the monthly budget you can spend on testing.
  2. Enter your target cost per acquisition (CPA), the most you can pay for a sale and still be happy, and your average order value (AOV).
  3. Choose how sure you want to be: a directional read, a solid read, or a full learning-phase read.
  4. Read the results: break-even return on ad spend, the spend each creative needs, how many creatives that budget supports, and the days a test takes.

The rule of thumb behind it

An ad cannot be judged on a handful of clicks. A common media-buying rule is to give each creative a multiple of your target CPA before you decide: around three times as a fast directional read, around ten times for a more confident one, and about 50 conversions' worth of spend if you want an ad set to exit the learning phase. This calculator multiplies your CPA by that factor, divides your budget by the result and tells you how many creatives you can properly test.

It is a planning aid, not a statistical test. Real significance depends on your conversion rate, audience size and the gap between the winner and the rest. The point is to stop you running twelve ads at a budget that only supports three.

Using the numbers

If the maths says you can afford only a few creatives, test fewer, but make them genuinely different from each other: change the hook, not the colour of the button. Five distinct openings on one product give you a real signal. Twenty near-duplicates give you noise.

Break-even ROAS is your AOV divided by your target CPA. Below it, a creative loses money at your chosen CPA, and above it, the creative is worth scaling. Gross margin matters too: if your margin is thin, set the target CPA below the break-even level.

Questions

About this tool.

Is this a statistical significance test?

No. It is a budgeting rule of thumb: spend a multiple of your target CPA on each creative before deciding. It stops you splitting a small budget across too many ads.

Where do the 3x, 10x and 50-conversion levels come from?

They are commonly used media-buying guidelines: roughly three times CPA for a quick kill-or-keep read, ten times for a firmer one, and about 50 optimisation events for Meta's learning phase. They are conventions, not laws.

What is break-even ROAS?

AOV divided by CPA. If you pay your target CPA for an average order, that is the revenue you get back per dollar of spend.

Should I test with a small budget?

Yes, but test fewer creatives. A smaller budget per creative gives noisy results, so reduce the number of ads rather than starving each one.

Is my data stored?

No. The maths runs in your browser and nothing is sent or saved.

How many creatives does an Ad Test Pack cover?

Five, each with a different hook. The calculator shows what testing five at your CPA would cost in media.
