Video to GIF, WebP and frame grabber.

Free · In your browser · No signup

Your files never leave your device. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server.

Cut a few seconds into an animated GIF or a smaller animated WebP, see the file sizes side by side, or scrub to the exact frame and save it as a sharp PNG. No upload, no watermark.

How to use it

  1. Drop in a video. Use the player to find the moment you want.
  2. For a GIF, set the start and length (up to 10 seconds), the width and the frame rate, then press Make GIF. Press Make animated WebP instead to get a WebP and a GIF of the same clip and compare their sizes.
  3. For a still, scrub to the frame and press Save frame as PNG. It is saved at the video's full resolution.
  4. Download the result. Nothing is added to it: no watermark, no logo.

Getting a small, clean GIF

GIF is an old format: it stores every frame as a picture with at most 256 colours, so file size grows fast. Three settings control it. Width has the biggest effect, and 480 pixels is plenty for an email, a landing page or a chat message. Frame rate comes next: 10 frames per second looks smooth enough for most product demos, while 15 suits fast movement. Length is the last: a three to five second loop is far more useful than a ten second one.

Pick a moment that loops naturally, such as a product turning, a texture swatch or a before and after wipe. For longer clips, a short MP4 almost always beats a GIF on size and quality, and most platforms autoplay it the same way.

GIF or animated WebP

An animated WebP is the same idea as a GIF, a short silent looping clip, but it uses a modern codec and is usually much smaller for the same picture, with more than 256 colours per frame. The tool builds both from the same frames and shows the real file sizes, so you can see the saving on your own clip rather than take our word for it. The WebP encoder is the open-source libwebp library compiled to WebAssembly and served from our own site; it downloads the first time you press the WebP button and runs on your device.

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari display animated WebP, but some email clients, chat apps and older tools still expect GIF. Use WebP for your own site and GIF where you cannot be sure.

Thumbnails and still frames

The frame grabber is a quick way to pull a poster image, a thumbnail for a landing page or a still for a comparison chart. Because it reads the decoded frame straight from your video, there is no extra compression. If your video has an on-screen caption at that moment, it is part of the frame, so pick a clean moment before you save.

Beauty and wellness advertisers often use a still of the product held to camera as the cover image for the ad, which gives you a consistent preview across placements.

Privacy

Your files never leave your device. This tool runs entirely in your browser: nothing is uploaded, stored or sent to a server. The page loads its code once and does the work on your device. There is no upload, no account and no watermark, and nothing you add is stored on our servers.

Questions

About this tool.

Is the video uploaded?

No. Frames are read from the video in your browser and the GIF or WebP is built locally. Nothing is sent anywhere.

Is animated WebP really smaller than GIF?

Usually, because it compresses with a modern codec instead of a 256-colour palette. The tool shows the actual sizes for your clip so you can check. The saving varies with the footage.

Where can I use an animated WebP?

Current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari show it, so it suits websites and landing pages. Some email clients and chat apps still need a GIF.

Is there a watermark or a length limit?

No watermark. Clips are limited to 10 seconds because GIF files grow very quickly beyond that.

Why is my GIF big?

GIF stores every frame uncompressed in a 256-colour palette. Lower the width or the frame rate, or shorten the clip.

What resolution is the PNG?

The full resolution of the video, with no extra compression.

Which video formats work?

Anything your browser can play: MP4, MOV (with H.264) and WebM in current browsers.

Should I use a GIF in an ad?

Rarely. Ad platforms take video directly, which is smaller and sharper. GIFs are best for email, documentation and chat.
